Strong leadership and responsive governance are essential to achieving universal access to sexual and reproductive health in Africa. Since its launch, the CARMMA campaign has demonstrated that political commitment drives measurable improvements in maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (RMNCAH) outcomes.
The evaluation of CARMMA revealed that AU Member States that prioritized political leadership and integrated RMNCAH into national agendas saw significant health gains. However, the evaluation also highlighted challenges—particularly limited domestic resources and competing national priorities that hindered sustained advocacy.
CARMMA Plus is reinforcing its commitment to high-level political advocacy, ensuring that the health and rights of women, children, and adolescents remain central to policy dialogue, resource allocation, and national development plans. By mobilizing domestic investment and leadership across all levels, the campaign seeks to create a lasting impact beyond 2030.
Key to this work is the implementation of the Accountability Partnership Framework, along with strengthened communication and resource mobilization strategies. These efforts aim to enhance coordination, align partner support, and foster transparency in health governance.
